Hospital bed closure plan rejected

A PLAN to close 600 hospital beds in two of Cardiff’s largest hospitals has been rejected by health minister Edwina Hart, a government source has confirmed.

Cardiff and Vale of Glamorgan Local Health Boards and Cardiff and Vale NHS Trust proposed closing surgical and medical wards at the University of Wales Hospital, Heath, in June last year. The proposal also included replacing a rehabilitation wing at Rookwood Hospital, on Fairwater Road, Llandaff. The move was hoped to encourage home care for patients with long-term health problems to cut costs. The plan was to be implemented over the next 10-years.
The source said the health minister had rejected the shake-up on financial terms.

A spokesperson for NHS trust said: “ We cannot comment at the moment as no official statements have been made.”
